The Ligurian Riviera with children is an excellent choice — but only if you know where to go. This guide focuses on Camogli, Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure, Recco and Genoa — where CasaViva has apartments — and on what genuinely works with children.
The Right Beach Makes All the Difference
Rapallo has the most family-friendly seafront: private lidos with sun loungers, showers, bars, and gently shelving seabed. Santa Margherita Ligure has mixed beaches with a well-equipped seafront and comprehensive facilities. Camogli is beautiful but its beach is pebbled and the water deepens quickly — perfect for older children who swim confidently.
What to Do with Children
The Ferry to San Fruttuoso
One of the most memorable experiences for children is the ferry from Camogli to San Fruttuoso. A medieval abbey rising from the sea, a small beach accessible only by water, clear snorkelling coves — it is a day trip children talk about for years.
Genoa Aquarium
Less than 40 minutes by train, the Genoa Aquarium is one of the largest in Europe. The Porto Antico also houses the Città dei Bambini and the Galata Maritime Museum.
The Rapallo Cable Car
The cable car up to the Sanctuary of Montallegro is short but spectacular. Riding up with children and seeing the Gulf spread below is a different kind of Riviera experience.
Family Apartments
A self-catering apartment is almost always more practical than a hotel with kids: you manage your own schedule, cook when you want, and have space. CasaViva apartments are available across the main destinations. Browse family apartments available for your dates.
When to Go
July is the most popular month for Italian families. If you have flexibility, June and September are ideal: warm sea, noticeably quieter beaches, and significantly lower prices.
