There is a moment of the year when Liguria reaches something close to perfection. It is not August — August is hot, crowded, and every choice involves a calculation about money. It is not September — September is already beautiful but still summer, still high season. It is October.
October in Liguria is the secret season. The sea is still warm (21–22°C), the colours of the landscape intensify, restaurants have time to cook properly again, and apartment prices often drop 30–40% compared to August.
The Weather: Better Than You Think
The first objection from people who have never tried Liguria in autumn is the weather. And I understand the hesitation — October sounds like rain, wind, grey skies.
The reality is more nuanced. October on the Ligurian Riviera averages 6–8 days of rain — spread across the month. Sunny days are frequent, daytime temperatures settle around 18–22°C, and the quality of the late afternoon light in October is the very thing that drew nineteenth-century painters specifically to this stretch of coast.
The sea at 21–22°C is completely swimmable for anyone used to northern waters. If you are arriving from Sweden, Ireland, or even the Po Valley, you will not feel the difference compared to July back home.
What Changes in October Versus Summer
Restaurants: in July and August, the best restaurants on the Riviera work at full capacity and the quality sometimes suffers. In October, chefs have more time, autumn ingredients are at their peak (porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, cured anchovies), and booking a table the same day is possible again.
Trails: the Portofino Natural Park in October is spectacular. The paths are not crowded, the forest colours are shifting, and the air has that freshness that makes hiking genuinely enjoyable rather than a sweaty ordeal.
Genoa: Genoa, always beautiful, comes alive with cultural events in October. The Aquarium, the Palazzi dei Rolli, the markets — all more enjoyable without the summer crowds.
Prices: apartments on the Riviera in October cost an average of 35% less than in July. On a week's stay, the difference can amount to several hundred euros.
The Right Places in October
Camogli in October is arguably at its finest. The village without its summer day-trippers is a completely different experience — in the morning you hear only the sea and the seagulls. The fishing harbour, the pastel houses, the afternoon light — all of it yours without negotiation.
Recco in October is the right destination for anyone coming specifically for focaccia col formaggio — the original, not the imitations. Recco's bakeries in the low season work at a calmer pace and the difference shows.
Genoa deserves a full day in October. The medieval old town, the caruggi, the Musei di Strada Nuova — all at a human pace.
A Weekend or a Full Week?
October works beautifully for both. A long weekend (Thursday–Sunday or Friday–Monday) is perfect for a short escape from the autumn city. A full week lets you absorb the Ligurian pace without rushing — probably the most satisfying formula for anyone travelling from further away.
In either case, choosing an apartment rather than a hotel changes the experience: you shop at the local market, cook dinner when you feel like it, leave when you want. In October, when the pace slows down, living the place as if it were yours is part of the trip.
Browse apartments available in October — availability is still good, but fills up quickly around long weekends and public holidays.
