Ligurian Riviera in September: Why It's the Best Month (and How Much You Save vs August)

September on the Ligurian Riviera: same sea, fewer crowds, prices 20–30% lower. Why savvy travellers skip August and book September instead.

Ligurian Riviera in September: Why It's the Best Month (and How Much You Save vs August)

There is a particular moment each year when the Ligurian Riviera finally exhales. The beaches empty out, the narrow lanes of Camogli become walkable again, and the sea — still warm from months of summer sun — belongs to whoever was smart enough to wait until September.

If you have ever considered visiting the Italian Riviera but felt put off by August crowds and prices, September is your answer. It is not a compromise. It is, for many seasoned travellers, the only way to visit.

Why September Feels Different from August

The difference between August and September on the Ligurian coast is not subtle. In August, the Riviera is spectacular but under siege: beaches at Santa Margherita Ligure fill up before 9am, the best restaurants in Rapallo require reservations made weeks in advance, and parking anywhere near Camogli is an exercise in patience and luck.

September changes all of that. Temperatures settle into a comfortable 24–26°C during the day, with evenings cool enough to finally sleep without a fan. The sea temperature, which peaks at the end of August, stays at 24–25°C well into September — warmer than most northern Europeans experience at home even in their best summers. And crucially, Italian schools restart in early September, which means the domestic holiday crowd disappears almost overnight.

What remains is the Liguria that travel writers and painters have been documenting for two centuries: the pastel-coloured houses stacked above fishing harbours, the scent of focaccia from early-morning bakeries, the olive groves climbing the terraced hillsides above the coast. All of it, without the noise.

What Actually Changes: A Practical Comparison

For travellers flying in from Germany, the Netherlands, or elsewhere in northern Europe, the practical differences between August and September are significant.

  • Prices: Apartment rentals on the Riviera typically cost 20–30% less in September than in August. On a three-night stay — the most popular duration for couples visiting the area — this can mean savings of €100–€150 or more, money that goes much further spent on dinners and day trips.
  • Crowds: The beaches are genuinely enjoyable. Free stretches of sand and pebble that are simply impossible to use in August become accessible again. You can arrive at 10am and find a spot.
  • Restaurants: The best trattorias along the Riviera — places serving proper Ligurian pesto, trofie pasta, and grilled fish caught that morning — are bookable again with reasonable notice. Service is better too: the kitchens are no longer running at panic speed.
  • Getting around: The regional train line that connects Genoa Airport to the Riviera towns (Genoa Brignole → Camogli → Santa Margherita → Rapallo) runs every 30–60 minutes and is entirely manageable with luggage in September. In August, the same trains are often standing room only.

Things to Do in September on the Ligurian Riviera

September is not just a quieter August. It has its own rhythm and its own activities.

Hiking in the Portofino Natural Park. The trails connecting Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino village, and the abbey of San Fruttuoso are among the finest coastal walks in Europe. In August, the heat makes them punishing. In September, with temperatures dropping slightly, the same paths become genuinely pleasurable. The walk from Camogli to San Fruttuoso (approximately 2.5 hours one way, moderate difficulty) offers continuous views over the Gulf of Tigullio and arrives at a medieval abbey accessible only by sea or on foot — no road, no cars, no August crowds.

Camogli. This small fishing town, with its impossibly tall houses painted in terracotta and ochre, is perhaps the most photogenic place on the entire coast. It is best experienced outside high season, when the harbour fills with actual fishing boats rather than tourist vessels, and the main square can be enjoyed with a coffee rather than navigated like an obstacle course.

Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo. These two towns form a natural pair for a short stay. Santa Margherita has the more refined atmosphere — a palm-lined promenade, upmarket boutiques, and a harbour from which ferries depart for Portofino. Rapallo is more authentically Italian, with a Thursday morning market, a medieval castle on the water, and an evening passeggiata that has been going on for generations.

Local food events. September is harvest season in Liguria. Villages in the hills above the coast hold sagre — traditional food festivals — dedicated to porcini mushrooms, local wine, and the region's famously aromatic basil. These are not tourist events; they are genuine community gatherings that happen to welcome visitors.

Swimming. The Mediterranean off the Ligurian coast reaches its warmest point in late August and holds that temperature through most of September. Swimming in September is genuinely excellent — the water is calm, clear, and warmer than many travellers expect.

When to Book and What to Expect

Weather in September on the Ligurian Riviera is generally reliable, with a few caveats worth knowing. The first week of September is effectively summer: clear skies, minimal wind, temperatures indistinguishable from August. From mid-September onward, afternoon thunderstorms become more likely — a typical Mediterranean pattern. These are usually brief and do not derail a well-planned trip; simply schedule outdoor activities in the morning and keep afternoons flexible.

Getting there from Genoa Airport (GOA): The airport is connected directly to Genoa Brignole station by shuttle bus (Volabus, approximately 30 minutes, €6). From Brignole, regional trains run along the coast to Camogli (25 min), Santa Margherita Ligure (35 min), and Rapallo (40 min). Total journey time from the airport to the Riviera is typically under 90 minutes without a car.

Booking timing: September books later than August, but the best apartments still go several months in advance. If you are planning a September trip, booking in June or July gives you the widest choice. If you are reading this in August, check availability now — there is usually still good inventory, but it narrows quickly in the final weeks before the month begins.

One practical recommendation: choose a single base rather than moving between towns. The coast is compact and the train is fast. A comfortable apartment in Camogli or Santa Margherita puts you within 20–30 minutes of everything worth seeing, without the friction of repacking every two days.
