What to See at the Genoa Aquarium (And Why It's Worth the Trip)

Europe's largest aquarium is in Genoa: 12,000 animals, the Biosfera by Renzo Piano, and live experiences with marine biologists. Your complete visitor guide.

What to See at the Genoa Aquarium (And Why It's Worth the Trip)

Europe's largest aquarium has called Genoa home for over thirty years, and yet it still manages to surprise. Set inside the Porto Antico — the old harbour district redesigned by Renzo Piano for the 1992 Columbus celebrations — the Genoa Aquarium is one of those rare tourist attractions that lives up to its reputation. With 27,000 square metres of exhibition space, 12,000 animals representing hundreds of marine species, and 200 varieties of plant life, a visit here is far more than a family day out. It is a complete immersion in the biodiversity of the world's oceans.

Whether you are stopping in Genoa for a day on your way along the Ligurian Riviera, or making it your base for exploring the region, the Aquarium deserves at least half a day of your time. Plan to arrive early — especially in summer and on weekends — and you will be rewarded with a quieter, more intimate experience before the crowds arrive.

ACQUARIO VILLAGE: MORE THAN JUST THE AQUARIUM

The Aquarium is the centrepiece of a broader complex known as Acquario Village, which includes several other structures worth exploring.

The Bigo is a panoramic lift designed by Renzo Piano, inspired by the cranes that once dominated this working harbour. It carries visitors up above the rooftops for a sweeping view over the Porto Antico, the sea, and the terracotta skyline of old Genoa. It is a short ride but a memorable one.

The Biosfera is equally striking: a glass and steel sphere, also designed by Piano, that encloses a tropical microclimate complete with birds, butterflies, and exotic vegetation. Step inside and you step into something closer to an Amazonian greenhouse than an aquarium annex. It is a genuinely beautiful space that rewards slow, unhurried exploration.

For families travelling with young children, La Città dei Bambini e dei Ragazzi (The Children's City) offers 2,000 square metres of interactive exhibits calibrated for kids aged two to twelve. The focus is on the five senses and hands-on discovery — expect a lot of noise, a lot of energy, and a lot of genuinely engaged children.

HIGHLIGHTS INSIDE THE AQUARIUM

The Aquarium's route takes visitors through a series of themed environments, each one meticulously recreated to reflect real ocean ecosystems. Water temperature, chemical composition, lighting — everything is calibrated to keep the animals healthy and to give visitors a sense of authenticity that more superficial attractions rarely achieve.

The shark tank is a perennial favourite, home to blacktip reef sharks and sand tiger sharks circling in slow, hypnotic loops. The jellyfish installation is something else entirely: lit from below and set against a dark background, it transforms these ancient, brainless creatures into something that looks like contemporary art. Spend a few minutes here and you will understand why so many visitors linger.

The dolphin area tends to generate the strongest emotional response, particularly among younger visitors. Watching these animals — alert, playful, and unmistakably intelligent — at close range is an experience that photographs cannot fully capture. The Aquarium's team is careful to balance visitor access with animal welfare, and it shows in the quality of what you observe.

Other not-to-miss areas include the coral reef tanks, the mangrove ecosystem, and the sections dedicated to deep-sea species. The seahorses and octopuses, often overlooked in favour of the bigger attractions, are genuinely fascinating and tend to reward patient observation.

LIVE EXPERIENCES AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

One of the things that sets the Genoa Aquarium apart from comparable institutions is the depth of its live experience programme. Visitors can follow marine biologists and keepers as they carry out feeding sessions, maintenance checks, and health monitoring. These are not staged performances — they are real working routines that visitors are invited to observe and, in some cases, participate in.

For school groups and families, the educational programmes are exceptionally well designed. Rather than passive reading from information panels, children are guided through interactive activities that address ocean conservation, biodiversity, and the science of marine ecosystems. The environmental message is embedded naturally into the experience rather than delivered as a lecture.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Tickets should be booked in advance on the official website acquariodigenova.it, particularly during peak season. Combined tickets covering the Biosfera and the Bigo panoramic lift offer excellent value if you plan to spend a full day at Acquario Village. The facility is fully accessible, with catering, a bookshop, and rest areas inside the main building.

Allow three to four hours for a thorough visit to the Aquarium alone. Add another hour or two if you plan to visit the Biosfera and the Bigo. It is easy to lose track of time here, which — depending on your perspective — is either a warning or a recommendation.

HOW TO GET THERE

  • By car: exit at Genova Ovest on the motorway, follow signs for Porto Antico.
  • By bus: lines 1 and 13 stop directly in front of the Aquarium.
  • By train: a 10–15 minute walk from Piazza Principe station. From Brignole station, take bus 13 to Piazza Caricamento.

Genoa itself is a city that rewards curiosity. Its medieval caruggi — the narrow, winding lanes of the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are best explored on foot, and the local cuisine (pesto, focaccia, farinata) is reason enough to linger beyond a single afternoon. The Aquarium makes an ideal starting point for discovering a city that far too many visitors overlook on their way to Cinque Terre or the Riviera resorts.
