Camogli or Rapallo: Which to Choose for Your Italian Riviera Holiday?

Two villages, twenty minutes apart, completely different moods. This guide helps you choose between Camogli and Rapallo for your Italian Riviera holiday.

Two villages twenty minutes apart. Same sea, same cuisine, same golden light in the late afternoon. Yet Camogli and Rapallo are deeply different places โ€” and choosing the right one can completely change the tone of your holiday.

This guide is not here to declare a winner. It is here to help you figure out which one is right for you.

Camogli: The Village That Doesn't Need to Show Off

Camogli has stayed almost unchanged for the past fifty years. The pastel-coloured houses reflect in the harbour, fishermen sort their nets in the early morning, and the only real commercial street in town counts a handful of shops. There is no yacht-filled marina, no luxury boutiques, no nightclubs.

This is not a flaw. It is precisely why thousands of people return every year.

Camogli's main beach is pebbled โ€” compact, never huge โ€” with clear water that deepens quickly. Those wanting more space or sand can reach the coves of the Portofino Natural Park by boat or on foot along the headland trails.

Camogli works best for people who want to genuinely slow down: coffee at seven in the morning on the seafront, uncomplicated beach days, aperitivo watching the sun set behind the colourful houses. It is also the ideal base for day trips to San Fruttuoso (accessible only by boat or on foot), Portofino, and the coastal trails of the headland.

Rapallo: The Town with Everything at Hand

Rapallo operates on a different scale. It is not a village โ€” it is a proper town with a wide seafront promenade, an active centre, restaurants across all budgets, supermarkets, shops, a pharmacy and a hospital. It also has a marina and a cable car up to the Sanctuary of Montallegro.

For those travelling with young children, elderly companions, or simply wanting everything available without depending on a car, Rapallo is the more practical choice. The train connection is frequent and reaches Santa Margherita, the Cinque Terre, Genoa and beyond.

Rapallo's seafront beach is served by private lidos with sun loungers, umbrellas, bars and showers โ€” less rugged than Camogli, more comfortable for families.

A Practical Comparison

  • Atmosphere: Camogli is authentic and quiet; Rapallo is lively and well-equipped
  • Beach: pebbles and coves in Camogli; serviced beaches in Rapallo
  • Facilities: essentials in Camogli; comprehensive in Rapallo
  • Dining: a handful of excellent restaurants in Camogli; wide choice in Rapallo
  • With young children: Rapallo is more practical
  • Without a car: Rapallo has better transport links
  • Peace and authenticity: Camogli, without question
